Horsepower on Ice

Every year in January and February, the crème de la crème of equestrian sports meets and mingles on the frozen lake of St. Moritz to witness the unique Snow Polo World Cup and the thrilling White Turf horse races.

Horses – I am never quite sure whether I love them or if they scare me. There is, however, no doubt that they are fascinating, elegant creatures and these four weekends in winter, when some of the world’s best race horses can be seen in action here in St. Moritz,  just get me.

The Snow Polo World Cup takes place every year over the last weekend in January (26th – 28th January 2024). During the three-day tournament, six teams play against each other. Even for spectators like myself, who do not entirely know all the rules in detail, it is totally worth watching this fast, enthralling game with world-class horses and elite players.

Following the polo on ice, the lake turns into a spectacular setting for the world-renowned White Turf horse races during the first three Sundays of February (4th, 11th & 18th of February 2024). There are always approximately 7 races, and they are always different, from trotting to flat and even Skikjöring, where the horses pull their jockeys behind them on skis.  You can bet on horses, have great food and drinks and listen to live music and watch the crowds. White Turf Family days on the 3rd, 10th and 17th of February 2024 are no less spectacular.

All of these happenings take place on the frozen lake of St. Moritz, which makes for a spectacular setting with the panoramic mountain views of the Swiss Alps as a backdrop. Preparations already start beginning of January, setting up all the tents and compressing the snow in order to get everything race-ready in time. If you happen to be in the Engadin Valley during this time of the year, make sure to go and see some of the fun, it really is worth it.
