An Aquatic Adventure: Water Sports in the Engadine Valley

Few places on earth evoke the raw beauty and majesty of Switzerland's Engadine Valley. Nestled amidst the Swiss Alps and home to the world famous St. Moritz resort, the high-altitude oasis offers a stunning blend of shimmering lakes, sweeping valleys, and towering peaks. This alpine paradise is not only a heaven for hikers and bikers in summer and skiers in winter but also a hotspot for watersport enthusiasts. Whether it's sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, or diving, the lakes of the Engadine Valley cater to all tastes.

The Engadine Valley boasts several enchanting lakes, including Silsersee, Silvaplanersee, and St. Moritzersee, each offering unique sailing experiences. The Maloja wind, prevalent during the afternoons, fills the sails, allowing boats to glide smoothly across the waters. Sailing schools offer lessons for beginners and equipment rental, making it easy for anyone to take to the waters.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is a serene and accessible way to explore the lakes of the Engadine Valley. It’s not only a fun watersport but also an immersive experience as you glide in the morning over the clear, calm waters, flanked by impressive alpine scenery. With equipment available for rent at numerous locations, SUP is an enjoyable activity for the whole family, providing a full-body workout while enabling you to connect with nature.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing have grown in popularity in the Engadine Valley, thanks to the reliable Maloja wind. The wind conditions make Silvaplanersee a preferred spot for these adrenaline-pumping sports. Several schools offer training sessions for beginners and rent out the necessary equipment. For the more experienced, the lake is a playground of high-speed action and thrilling maneuvers.

While the Engadine Valley might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about scuba diving, the lakes’ crystal-clear waters provide an exciting opportunity to explore underwater, especially in the winter season when the lake is covered by a thick layer of ice.

The Inn river’s stretch in the lower Engadine is an ideal spot for white-water rafting. And the Italian Val Bodengo, that is very close to Switzerland, offers a perfect playground for canyoning. Both sports offer some thrilling moments on the water, surrounded by a panorama of alpine beauty.

With an array of activities to choose from, the picturesque Engadin offers a unique blend of tranquillity and adrenaline. So, the next time you plan a trip to St. Moritz, consider adding a splash of adventure to your itinerary. It promises to be an unforgettable experience, where pristine waters meet unparalleled natural grandeur.
